The objective of the Interregional Tripartite Meeting on the Future of Social Security in Arab States was to provide a forum to review and assess the range of relevant options which member States of the Arab World may wish to employ for the extension of social security coverage and the strengthening of social security in the Middle East and North Africa.

The Interregional Tripartite Meeting on the Future of Social Security in Arab States (Amman, 6-8 May 2008) provided a forum for representatives of Governments, employers and workers to review and assess the current state of social security in the Middle East and North Africa, and to reflect on strategies aiming at extending social security coverage and strengthening social security. The meeting was organized jointly by the International Labour Organization, through its Department of Social Security (Geneva), Regional Office for Arab States (Beirut),and Regional Office for Africa (Addis Ababa) and the Arab Labour Organization. The meeting concretized the recommendations of the ILO Asian and African Regional Meetings (in 2006 and 2007) on social security and provided orientation for the action of the International Labour Office in the framework of its Global Campaign for the extension of social security till 2015. The ILO conclusions of the meeting acknowledge the progress that has been achieved in the past, and call for increased efforts to further improve the design and governance of social security schemes, and to develop effective policies to extend social security coverage to the population including a minimum set of social security guarantees to the population.
