The objective of the Interregional Tripartite Meeting on the Future of Social Security in Arab States was to provide a forum to review and assess the range of relevant options which member States of the Arab World may wish to employ for the extension of social security coverage and the strengthening of social security in the Middle East and North Africa.

La Reunión Tripartita Interregional sobre el Futuro de la Seguridad Social en los Estados Arabes (Amman, 6-8 de mayo de 2008) brindó un foro a representantes de Gobiernos, empleadores y trabajadores para analizar y evaluar el estado actual de la seguridad social en Oriente Medio y Africa del norte, y para relfexionar sobre estrategias que tienen por objetivo extender la cobertura de la seguridad social y reforzar esta misma. La reunión fue organizada conjuntamente por la Organización Internacional del Trabajo a través del Departamento de Seguridad Social (Ginebra), la Oficina Regional de la OIT para los Estados Arabes (Beirut) y la Oficina Subregional de la OIT para Africa Oriental (Addis Abeba) y la Organización Arabe del Trabajo. La reunión concretó las recomendaciones de las reuniones regionales de la OIT llevadas a cabo en Asia y Africa (2006 y 2007) en materia de seguridad social y brindó una orientación de la acción de la Oficina Internacional del Trabajo en el marco de su Campaña mundial para la extensión de la seguridad social hacia 2015. Las conclusiones de la reunión de la OIT reconocen el progreso realizado en el pasado y exortan a hacer mayores esfuerzos en el mejoramiento del diseño y la gobernanza de los sistemas de seguridad social, así como en el desarrollo de políticas efectivas para extender la cobertura de seguridad social a la población incluyendo un paquete básico de prestaciones de seguridad social.
